DESIGN EDUCATION AS COUNTER-MOVEMENT

This article describes how design and thus design education can be seen as a counter-movement in an era characterized by uncertainty, upheavel, chaos and extremism. Amongst all this design remains an optimistic discipline with designers still able to capture the poetry and humanity that is out there. The new generation of designers shows a inclination to utilize design as an act of engagement, they want to make a difference, not by solving the worlds problems, but by creating meaningful alternatives. To do so they need an intuitive sense of compassion and a 'cosmoplitan attitude' (as philosopher Martha Nussbaum calls it). This underlines the importance of teaching humanities and narrative as part of design practice.
